IITs, NIT likely to increase fees by 150% to 200%!

In what would be steepest hike since the inception of Indian Institutes of Technology & the National Institute of Technology, the councils of both the premier engineering institutes have recently proposed a hike in fees to meet the working capital expenditures & revenue expenditures from students’ tuition fees itself & the government should bear the cost of planned capital expenditures like Labs, Equipments, Library etc.

The IIT fees are highly subsidized for the students as the government bears almost 75% of the actual cost of Rs. 3.5 Lakhs spent by the IITs annually behind every student however the student pays only Rs. 90,000 per annum.

This is also said to be devised keeping in mind the placements & packages that the students receive once the graduate from these elite engineering colleges like IIT & NIT. There are students who rope in a package of Crores of rupees even as the avg. salary package is Rs. 8 – 10 Lakhs/annum. We had already highlighted the lucrative packages offered to IIT Kharagpur students in one of our previous articles.

The updated fees structure for IITs will be Rs. 2.5 Lakhs/annum where the students will bear the entire cost. The councils have also devised a plan to ease the norms & terms of educations loans provided to these students in order to help them facilitate their engineering careers.
